Jammu & Kashmir

My speech on Jammu & Kahsmir:

Respected Teacher and My Dear friends,

Mughal Emperor Jehangir said about this place – If there is heaven on earth then it is here. It is crown of India and denotes Head in India’s map…

Those lovely Shikaras in the lake, snow capped mountains with highest peaks of India with rivers like Chenab, Jhelum, Indus and Tawi in between carrying water to the plains of multiple countries.

I know that you all know, I am talking about Jammu and Kashmir or as we call it J & K.

The state boast of two capital city – Srinagar as Summer capital and Jammu as Winter capital

Made of three regions – Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir valley, J&K boast of different environment – snowy desert of Ladakh, different valleys like Kashmir and plains of Jammu.

Different languages like Kashmiri, Urdu, Dogri, Pahari, Balti, Ladakhi, Gojri, Shina and Pashto are spoken here.

The culture here is mix of Muslim in Kashmir Valley, Hindu – Dogra in Jammu, and Buddhist and Tibetan in Ladakh region. This mix of philosophies has evolved in composite culture based on the values of humanism and tolerance.

Annual mask festival, Dhumal dance, Rouff, Hafira dance, Bacha Nagma dances are performed in J&K. Kashmir has a rich tradition of folk music. The most popular Kashmiri folk music is known as the Rabab. The dukra, sitar and nagara are popular musical instruments.

Woven carpets, silk carpets, rugs, woolen shawls, pashmina items, pottery and hand-embroidered kurtas, Phirans and shawls reflect the tradition and ability of the local artisans who embroider the most intricate patterns and motifs in a combination of vibrant colors and hues.

J&K is picturesque place and is dotted with many shrines and monuments starting from Buddhist monastery in Ladakh, to several others like Hazratbal Dargah, Shankaracharya Temple, Hari Parbat Fort Makhdoom Sahib, Awantipur Temples, Amarnath Yatra, Imam Bara's, Mata Vaishno Devi shrine, Pari Mahal, and Thicksey Gompa.

Gujjars – the herdsman, Bakkarwalas, lamas are distinct people from this state.

So next time when your parents are planning for a vacation, insist on going to Jammu and Kashmir. Also do not forgot to enjoy Shikaras in Dal Lake and bring some snow and lot of charms of Kashmiri people for all of us….

Thanks……….
